College
for Kids: 25 Years and Going Strong
College
for Kids, a program for gifted and talented elementary students, sponsored
by the St. Louis Community College at Meramec is in its 25th year!
College for Kids
was started by three women with a passion for reaching gifted children.
These women are also credited with founding SAGE, St. Louis Association
for Gifted Education. In 1979, Donna Kerwin, Helen McAchran and Bonnie
Zweibelmann approached Dick Black at St. Louis Community College at
Meramec, Continuing Education regarding the needs of gifted children.
The first classes were held
the summer of 1982. Helen McAchran served as the Program Coordinator
from 1982-1994. The first classes were offered to second through sixth
graders. Course offerings included On Stage, Young Artists, Electronics,
Sports Physiology, All Kinds of Science, Creative Writing and Beginning
French. By 1985 the courses were offered to children who had completed
kindergarten through eighth grade.
A fall program was
added in 1984 followed by a spring program in 1985. Although the spring
program became successful, the fall program was discontinued after the
1988 program.
Currently, the College
for Kids Summer program offers 40 - 50 classes. There are approximately
20 classes offered in the spring program.
SAGE endorses the
College for Kids program held at the St. Louis Community College at
Meramec and grants scholarships based on recommendations from area gifted/talented
coordinators.
